Interior Painting & Décor Evesham, NJ: How to Create a Unique Ceiling
If you’re looking for a slightly less conventional – but not too difficult to achieve – concept for your next painting project, why not customize your ceiling?
You just need two colors, separated by a single line on your wall or ceiling.
For example, if you repaint your ceiling and use the same color to cover the top of the wall, you can bring definition and distinction to your space by extending the ceiling, creating a successful and visually appealing effect.
Likewise, if you paint the walls and continue past the joint between the wall and the ceiling, you will create the illusion of a larger wall. An illusion that will bring height and space to your room – the perfect solution for small spaces.
The Heartwood Look
This look is easy to achieve. You just need to master the technique of painting a straight and precise line. Follow our step-by-step plan.
Necessary material:
- Paints in the color of your choice
- Roller and tray
- Mixer
- Paintbrushes
- Masking tape
- Level
- Rope, scissors, chalk, and thumbtack
- Measuring tape and pencil
- Protective canvas (to cover furniture and the floor)
- Ladder (to access hard-to-reach places)
Step 1: Apply top color
Decide where your horizontal line will be and make some pencil marks, before painting the top of the wall with your first color. Let dry.
Step 2: Draw the line with chalk
From the ceiling, using the tape measure, measure the precise location of your line. Make some pencil lines and make sure they are straight with your level
Then chalk the entire length of the rope, stretch the rope across the wall, along the pencil lines, and secure it at its ends with masking tape or tacks. Make sure the string is straight, and pull it before releasing it to leave a chalk line on the wall.
Step 3: Mask
Carefully apply the masking tape to your chalk line. This will give you a nice clean line. Use a good quality, low-tack masking tape, which is easily removed without damaging the fresh paint.
Step 4: Apply your second color
Using a roller, apply paint to the edge of the masking tape to create a perfect line. Since you will be slightly overlapping the first color, apply two coats to ensure a beautiful result.
Step 5: Remove the tape and admire
Finally, remove the masking tape to reveal your new horizontal line. To avoid removing the paint with the masking tape, do so just before the paint is completely dry.
Bonus Tips
- Always paint away from the light (so start near the window) and along the length of the ceiling.
- While painting, face the light. This gives you a better overview of the result, without shadows.
- Start by painting the edges, with a round brush.
- Divide the ceiling into imaginary square meters.
- Distribute the paint well on the roller (using the grid) and paint in strips over the first square meter. Pass the roll in one direction and the other of this square meter. This distributes the paint evenly while respecting the quantities recommended on the paint can.
- Distribute the paint lengthwise and crosswise (crosswise). Finish with a rolling motion along the length of the ceiling.
- Paint the next square meter in the same way, overlapping the previous part by about a length of a roll.
- Repeat these steps until the entire width of the ceiling is painted.
- Start the next strip, always overlapping the previous surface with the length of the roller.
